Pay attention to those tiny red dots on your arm — they might be early signs your body is trying to warn you about.

Health professionals in the UK are warning about an unusual surge in scabies cases, with over 3,600 hospital-diagnosed infections reported nationwide. They’re urging anyone who notices small red spots or persistent itching to seek medical attention promptly.

Scabies is a highly contagious skin condition caused by tiny mites that burrow into the skin, triggering intense itching and rashes. It spreads through close physical contact, making early diagnosis and treatment essential to prevent further transmission.

Key symptoms include:

  • Intense itching (often worse at night)
  • A raised, spotty rash or red dots
  • Commonly affected areas: between fingers, around the wrists, underarms, waist, groin, and buttocks

While scabies typically avoids the head and neck, young children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems may experience symptoms in these areas as well. A more severe and contagious form—crusted scabies—can appear as flaky rashes on the hands, feet, elbows, or knees.

According to Prof. Kamila Hawthorne, chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners, many people hesitate to get help because of embarrassment or social stigma. “GP diagnoses are rising above the five-year average, especially in the north of England,” she stated. “Though scabies isn’t life-threatening, it can be extremely uncomfortable and may lead to skin infections if untreated.”

A contributing factor to the outbreak is a growing shortage of treatment options, making prevention and early action even more vital.

Don’t ignore the signs — check your skin and speak to a doctor if you suspect anything unusual.
